Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) is a national Finnish university of technology and economics. LUT`s areas of strength are related to the forest and metal industry clusters, electrical engineering, energy, economics, information and communication technology, and expertise in Russia.
The Department of Energy and Environmental Technology at Lappeenranta University of Technology
is the only university-level research and training unit in Finland which is specialised in. In addition, the department provides postgraduate licentiate and doctoral education, conducts research related to energy technology and has an international Master’s degree programme in bioenergy technology. The department employs approximately 90 people, including 12 professors.

LUT’s research activity on the bioenergy emphasises the development of technology and business related to the bioenergy refining chain and bioenergy utilisation. Domestic and international cooperation in research with universities and other research institutes generates high-quality international and scientific bioenergy expertise. Long-term applied research and development promotes the creation of new bioenergy-related business activity. The target group consists especially of businesses involved in biofuel production, refining and machine and equipment manufacturing, businesses that produce and consume energy, engineering consultancies as well as entrepreneurs planning to launch a business in the field. The bioenergy research group is located in the city of Mikkeli, in the region of South Savo in Eastern Finland.
